A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT TO APPROPRIATE FUNDS TO PROVIDE TEACHERS WITH THE SAME LONGEVITY BENEFITS AS STATE EMPLOYEES.

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

Section 1.  Longevity payments shall be at one and one-half percent (1.5%) of base salary for 10 to 14 years of State service, two and one-quarter percent (2.25%) of base salary for 15 to 19 years of State service, three and one-quarter percent (3.25%) of base salary for 20 to 24 years of State service, and four and one-half percent (4.5%) of base salary for 25 years of State service, commencing July 1, 1995, for all teachers whose salaries are supported from the State's General Fund.  These funds shall be allocated to individuals according to rules adopted by the State Board of Education and the Superintendent of Public Instruction.  The longevity payments shall be paid in a lump sum once a year.

Sec. 2.  There is appropriated from the General Fund to State Aid to Local School Administrative Units the sum of twenty million three hundred twenty-six thousand eight hundred twenty dollars ($20,326,820) for the 1995-96 fiscal year and the sum of twenty million three hundred twenty-six thousand eight hundred twenty dollars ($20,326,820) for the 1996-97 fiscal year to implement the provisions of Section 1 of this act.

Sec. 3.  This act becomes effective July 1, 1995.
