AN ACT TO AMEND G.S. 20-7(f) SO AS TO REWARD SAFE DRIVERS BY ELIMINATING THE REQUIREMENT FOR TAKING WRITTEN AND ROAD TESTS WHEN APPLYING FOR RENEWAL OF CHAUFFEUR'S LICENSE.

 

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

 

Section 1.  A new paragraph is added to subsection (g) of G.S. 20-7, to read as follows:

"Provided further, that no person who applies for the renewal of his chauffeur's license shall be required to take a written examination or road test as a part of any such examination unless such person has been convicted of a traffic violation or had prayer for judgment continued with respect to any traffic violation within a four-year period immediately preceding the date of such person's renewal application or unless such person suffers from a mental or physical condition which impairs his ability to operate a motor vehicle."

Sec. 2.  The Department of Motor Vehicles shall monitor the occurrence of traffic violations within the State and submit yearly reports to the General Assembly. The effect of this act on the violation statistics of North Carolina drivers as of January 1, 1976, and each year thereafter shall be included in the yearly report to allow the objective evaluation of this act and its effect on North Carolina drivers.

Sec. 3.  This act shall become effective May 1, 1975 and shall expire on June 1, 1977.
