AN ACT TO PROVIDE A PROCEDURE FOR CHANGING THE NAME OF MUNICIPALITIES IN NORTH CAROLINA.

 

The General Assembly of North Carolina do enact:

 

Section 1.  The governing body of any municipal corporation may, upon its own motion, or shall, upon receipt of a petition signed by fifteen percent (15%) of the qualified voters therein, call a special election for the purpose of changing the name of the municipality. At least 30 days before the date of the election, notice shall be published once a week for four weeks in a newspaper published or having general circulation within the municipality, setting forth the dates of registration and of the election and the proposed new name for the municipality.

Sec. 2.  The election shall be conducted in the same manner and under the same laws governing regular municipal elections. If a majority of the qualified voters vote in favor of changing the name, then the proposed new name shall be adopted for the municipality.

Sec. 3.  All laws and clauses of laws in conflict with this Act are hereby repealed.

Sec. 4.  This Act shall be in full force and effect from and after its ratification.
